How To Reduce Number Of Bugs-A Mentee Asked Me

I am newly hired.
I want your guidance.
Said a mentee in a call.

I asked him to give some background.
He said, “I am newly hashtag#hired to team.”

Then I asked him what is a challenge?
He told “I am asked to reduce the number of production bugs. And also avoid hashtag#bugs in next releases.”

He then said, “I am hired as hashtag#automation tester. There is not much of hashtag#documentation. I don’t know how to proceed further and confused totally”.

I then asked if there are any test cases documented.
Answer was no.

As you can see, the challenge here is, there is not much documentation about hashtag#product requirement, no test cases available, there many bugs in production, and he is hired as Automation Tester.

Task is to reduce number of bugs.

My suggestions to him were as follows:
1. First learn the product by exploring it.
2. Make notes learning and document.
3. Review with the product manager.
4. Start testing-feature by feature.
5. Don’t think of automating now.
6. Learn product and know users.
7. Write high level scenarios.
8. Get reviewed by PM.
9. Even if there is doubt, report as bug
10. Don’t assume anything and ask the questions
11. Think about automation only after at least one release.

He appreciated my suggestion, but seemed to be bit upset because he had to do ‘manual testing’. Though initially.

P.S: What are your suggestions, if this is asked to you?
